Elvis mania came to us in 2004 in the form of press from around half the globe, from the BBC to NBC! Radio 2 to Seattle Radio!
Author Allan Morrison, from Greenock had been researching the ancestors of the great man and it was discovered that the early American settlers of the Presley family came from Lonmay back in 1745 when one Andrew Presley emigrated to North Carolina.
There are still Pressley (different spelling but this is quite common) families in the area, many of them musical, to whom it came as no surprise that they might be related to the rock-n-roll king. They had thought for years there was a connection.
Suggestions have been flooding in as to how to celebrate this incredible connection! However, changing the name to Heartbreak Hotel is not one of them!
All the recent excitement of learning that Elvis Presley’s ancestors came from this area has led to one local entrepreneur, Mike King, to design a ‘Presley of Lonmay Tartan’. Both Tina and David thought it would be a nice idea to redecorate one of the public rooms with this new Tartan. Watch this space!
